Meredith Davies Hadaway

Young Robin by Amanda Snyder

Year after year, I watch my neighbor’s
crocuses reclaim the yard. Purple spreads
from edge to edge while the ghost
of grass still sleeps beneath a frosted veil.

Nothing can deter their clamor to return.
Expanding beyond fence and boundary,
they pop up beneath a bench, beside a brick,
between the stones of my front walk.

Welcome emissaries whose radiant
message just as quickly disappears.
Here today and gone tomorrow—as
my flower guide describes—like hope.
