Yard Work

Proclamations of Tenancy by O:JA&L staff creative

Don’t get me wrong, I like pollinators. But when my ninety year old neighbor asks me to move an old bale of hay from her back yard, I disturb a nest of ground bees and they have a good go at both of us. My neighbor uses a walker to get around so is an easy target. I barely get her inside after forty or so stings and manage to give her Benadryl and call 911. I get maybe fifteen stings and escape with a delayed auto-immune reaction. I’m still working on re-kindling my affection for bees, and I haven’t been over to my neighbor’s house again to volunteer my help.

The Buttonhook Press Masters Series

The Buttonhook Press Masters Series (from OPEN: Journal of Arts & Letters and its Buttonhook Press imprint) gathers acclaimed writers for concise, downloadable chapbooks that pair fresh work with candid reflections on craft. Each installment—often framed by an interview with an associate editor—opens a window onto how masters of poetry, prose poetry, flash fiction, and related hybrid forms build voice, compression, and surprise. Designed as a reader’s invitation and a writer’s toolbox, the series celebrates literary art that moves fast, cuts deep, and lingers long after the last line.
