Diary Entry Written in the Shadow of an Asteroid
Today’s the day. Everybody says so. First it was the Mayans many millennia ago who carved their predictions into stone. Now it’s all of the astronomers and scientists with the aid of AI who tell us today’s the day. And all of the astrologers who look to the stars for answers. Not to mention all of the priests, reverends, rabbis, imams. In fact, all of the clergy around the globe agree with all of the scientists. And all of the world’s leaders. Everyone everywhere has united, for once, to say goodbye in one voice, the voice I’ve always imagined deep down belonged to God. Even my wife, a devout optimist who nevertheless chose to take the day off and sleep in for once, even she says today is the day. And I believe her. I believe in her. So this will be my final entry. The last thing I remember her telling me before she fell asleep last night was that I should write a poem to mark the occasion. She started snoring before I could tell if she was joking.
