John Dorroh
THAT GRAVITY WEREN’T SUCH A PAIN

The thing with Gravity is that he keeps sucking
and sucking all things down, holding my grand-
daughter’s desk to the dirty, unwaxed linoleum,
keeping dead goldfish stuck in a disgusting, gummy
wad on the bottom of the tank, and forming creases
in the tired skin of my forehead.
I want a break, Gravity. I need it, and I need it now!
Let the plum trees in the backyard go helter-skelter,
spilling their fruit into the heavens, sideways, anyway
but down.
Let the foxes become disoriented so they can
give their sly a rest for a solitary day.
Let our Mother Earth have respite from all the tides –
high and low – and let whatever happens happen.
It might be good for us.
I know that physicists and astronomers
would go absolutely mad, attempting to explain
why rain drops suddenly go up instead of down,
and sad lovers with their runaway tears.
But I for one would like to flee from bondage
at least for part of a day to see my sagging neck –
my wattle — swing from side to side rather than pointing down
to the ground
like it always does.
About the writer:
John Dorroh travels as often as possible. He inevitably ends up in other peoples’ kitchens exchanging culinary tidbits and telling tall tales. Once he baked bread with Austrian monks and drank a healthy portion of their beer. Six of his poems were nominated for Best of the Net. Others have appeared in over 100 journals, including Feral, North of Oxford, River Heron, Wisconsin Review, Kissing Dynamite, El Portal, and Loch Raven Review. He makes his home in Southwest Illinois not far from St. Louis. In his next life he would like to be a penguin.

The Buttonhook Press Masters Series
The Buttonhook Press Masters Series (from OPEN: Journal of Arts & Letters and its Buttonhook Press imprint) gathers acclaimed writers for concise, downloadable chapbooks that pair fresh work with candid reflections on craft. Each installment—often framed by an interview with an associate editor—opens a window onto how masters of poetry, prose poetry, flash fiction, and related hybrid forms build voice, compression, and surprise. Designed as a reader’s invitation and a writer’s toolbox, the series celebrates literary art that moves fast, cuts deep, and lingers long after the last line.
