Meredith Davies Hadaway
[Among the many disappearing things]

The dial tone—small presence
humming under the breath—prelude
to cascading frequencies still
capable of song and voice—
before an automated menu shut
us out—back when the dullest
sound could cut through both
daylight—and darkness—constant
or stuttering—and, when silence
called, could answer.
