Who we are

OPEN: Journal of Arts & Letters (O:JA&L) is a multi-platform arts journal accessible online through most hand-held devices. O:JA&L features new content published continually. At O:JA&L, we have adopted an eclectic aesthetic and a unique publishing schedule to satisfy our audience’s demand for freshness and variety.

Who we expect to be

O:JA&L began publishing in 2017 as a privately-owned publication that offered subscribers a range of contemporary aesthetic experiences made available through several media platforms. In 2021 Ojal Art, Inc., still publishing as OPEN: Journal of Arts & Letters (O:JA&L), was incorporated and registered in California as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation to carry forward the original purposes of the journal.

O:JA&L has as its primary ambition to gather, publish, and popularize notable contemporary writing and other fine arts and to promote the work of its contributors to a varied and discerning international audience.

O:JA&L offers its audience the opportunity to sample an array of artistic expressions presented by both emerging and established contemporary artists, writers, musicians, and videographers from around the world.

O:JA&L offers its contributors access to viewers and readers in an ever-expanding worldwide audience.

What we do

O:JA&L publishes arresting art and writing of nearly every stamp and style on the O:JA&L platforms.

O:JA&L offers special chapbook collections and other special print projects to sponsors and patrons through our imprint BUTTONHOOK PRESS .

O:JA&L hosts live interviews on Facebook featuring prominent writers and art professionals. These are permanently archived on our Youtube channel. A wide range of issues and aesthetic convictions is explored in detail in this series.

What we expect to do

O:JA&L, through open calls for submissions and through direct solicitation, will actively seek content that is unique, skillfully executed, thematically sophisticated, and suitable for the neglected “general” audience.

O:JA&L will actively promote its published writers and artists on its website and on Instagram, Facebook, MeWe, Twitter, Parler, LinkedIn, Tumblr, Pinterest, and in eastern Europe, on VK.

O:JA&L will make at least one post per day, seven days per week on selected social media platforms. No published art, no published writing is ever retired to an archive.

Where we began

Open: Journal of Arts & Letters was founded in 2017 as a family enterprise in support of a generous interpretation of artistry.

What we expect of ourselves

O:JA&L has two guiding principles that inform its editorial practice:

  1. to promote and publicize our artists and writers aggressively through social media to an appreciative audience of devoted, generous patrons,
  2. to create an atmosphere without hostility wherein important conversations concerning the arts and the human condition may be carried on rationally and civilly.
