2019/20 Special CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS:
Nonfiction: Combat Memoir or CNF (to 10,000 words)

Open: Journal of Arts & Letters (O:JA&L) will consider fee-free submissions of memoir and creative nonfiction based in war experience while deployed in a frontline combat role. Submissions should contain from 1,0001 up to 10,000 words, not counting the title, byline and any epigraph. This call extends to all military personnel on active duty or retired, who served in any international or regional armed conflict or police action and includes MERCs and military contractors. O:JA&L especially seeks responses from Allied, Axis, NATO, Warsaw Pact, and IDF veterans. Other veterans of the armed forces of any internationally recognized nation-state, past or present, may also submit. Submissions may be in English, Spanish, or Russian. Submissions in this category must be in the .docx file format. Any accompanying illustrations, photographs, or maps provided to O:JA&L by the writer should be appropriately cleared with chain of command and should be submitted as .jpeg files. When permissible, each work should state as a subtitle the nation, service arm, operation designation, combat unit designation, and the time, date, and location of the described action.

To ensure processing by the correct editors, the subject line or cover letter should include the words “War experience while deployed in a frontline combat role.”

The cover letter should include a brief professional biography of the submitter in third person, up to 100 words, including where appropriate the writer’s service arm, unit designation, rank, and MOS.

Expedited evaluation of submissions is not available in this category.
