Sam Ambler

Louisiana Bayou by Joseph Rusling Meeker

She were my friend
when I was standing there
in them trees,
not talking or nothing,
just kind of keeping my eyes open,
wide and listening.
She come up to me
and took ahold of my hand.
I near broke and cried—
them trees,
standing there like that,
growing and
listening at my heart.
