Daniel Seifert

Day of Rest

Reclining Woman with Pinks by Max Beckmann

Outside clouds wag their tails, begging you to play, so you
draw the curtain. Feeling time as an old god would. Bed unmade

and spine to couch, Seinfeld centered on a deep black screen: now you see
yourself reflected in a show about nothing. Mouldering

tea cup needs cleaning. Walk the dog and rub her velvet ears
in blue hum of a descending lift. You’ll return

to the touch of couch and a bag of chips, recently made empty
stretches like a relieved cadaver in the sun. Cue

a twinge in your solar plexus
possibly wind but probably a heart attack, so

friends can say he died as he lived
doing nothing. Boneless laundry

in a basket. You’ll never
forget these days; they’re like all others.

Night soon,
one day down.
