D.S. Maolalai
My dog makes a metaphor

the dog’s cut her pad
on some glass from outside
our apartment,
broke on the quayside
by some drunk
some night. she limps for a while
and we bandage it –
she heals and forgets;
tries to run to her foodbowl
that morning and flakes
the scab off. on our kitchen
tile floor; tiny
footprints, dead rose petals.
she forgets – she repeats – she forgets.
