Playing Fetch

Girls Playing with Dogs by Max Beckman

Five summers on, I take the brush
and circle the date
under my eyes.
I look down, from the
factory-sealed concealer
to the gashed-open
plum alkyds you loved.
Blobs I see no
future blots in.

Nearby, my dog chases
its tail.
