I couldn’t open my eyes this morning, although I tried to flip up my lids with my forehead and temple muscles. Because my tongue was stuck to the roof of my mouth, I made my way to the faucet where I poured and drank a glass of water, all the while worrying that without opening my eyes my hearing would sharpen and I would hear things I don’t want to know. My roommate examined my eyes and discovered a spider web inextricably woven into both sets of lashes. I had reason for concern. The hairs on my arms vibrated to cries of the violin across town, and I began to walk the fourteen miles without a white cane. Traffic surged around me, although it created a wind to flirt with my skirt. I felt it, but of course could not see the intent. When I approached my destination, the music slowed into an absolute silence. Then came the crashing of the violin upon the rocks.
