Summer Solstice 2018

‘Heart” by Deborah Norton

Don’t ask me about days,
where hours go
each night as I dream bees,
don’t bother me
with abacus beads,
the secrets of Stonehenge,
with sundials or iron
weather vanes, I am
displaced from mud,
from earthworms, weeping
early morning complaints
of crows. I must erase
this place, celebrate
light without fear, ponder
the skin on top of
my hands, sun-browned
and thin, translate
my joints and veins,
gather thick clouds,
lightning into sign language,
sift through photographs
of grandchildren, the living,
the dead, my heart
multiplying to embrace
its own division, my teeth
are copper, my blood
like turpentine.
I carry my suitcase,
tired flesh, broken
oyster shells, postcards
to ghosts, I search for
sacred water, nightmares
without clocks or prayer
books, a rock to break the hour
glass, her sunlit hand.
